As I scrolled down, I can't tell you how much I was hoping you'd chose Albus Severus as one of the characters, if only because that name is so horribly awesome.
But I've not read the book and don't plan to, so I'm not sure about characterisation in that epilogue. At any rate, I'm going to scroll up now and give this a proper read, since you do write such enjoyable stories. I just had to comment on Albus Severus because I was almost surprised at the James choice (have I been paying too much attention to non-serious responses to the book? quite likely!)
Oh! That was so sad and so sweet and so cozy and everything all at once. I really liked the third-person style going on, I'm not sure what about it exactly, but it was good. I'm eager to see the rest!
OH lord.........is it bad that I'm reading this before I've read the book? I'm going to be ruined because this is so good...more of whatever you and cara are brewing!
OK, so do you have some Imperius something or other on your LJ? Because we're less than a day away from new canon and I'm already in love with fic. This fic.
I love this Teddy - how he wants to fit in, be a part of the family, but knows he's not, much like Harry was in the beginning. And I like James, even though we haven't seen him much yet.
And this line...
"I didn't do it," James said immediately. Aunt Ginny rolled her eyes.
"He gets that phrase from his father," she said, balancing Lily on one hip.
... made me laugh out loud.
I'll definitely be following this one. Thanks for picking up the baton and running with it, Sam!
I knew I could count on you for some great post-DH fic! This is awesome! That was one of the things the book ending disappointed me- I really wanted to see Harry being Godfather to Teddy. I suppose I thought Teddy would go live with Harry, or something . . .
I would imagine that Andi took over the raising of Teddy because Harry at seventeen was obviously a bit young to be a daddy -- and by the time he and Ginny were married, they probably didn't want to upset Teddy's life by transplanting him into their new family. :/ I think that's what JKR's saying with the whole "he eats with us four times a week" line -- Harry and Ginny have been good to Teddy and love him, they just weren't the ones to raise him.
Wow... I just... WOW. *laughs* I can't believe you're writing this, but I can at the same time. They just feel so YOUNG and NEW to me, like I want to give them sweets! *shakes head* Although I am looking forward to reading more, Sam!
This made me feel better about book 7. If stories like this can come out of the horrible heteronormativity of the epilogue it can't be all bad.
I love that you showed just how hard it would be to be a queer kid in the exclusively hetero post-war happy-families world that JKR leaves us with, the cost of making things safe for the children by cleaving to such narrow definitions of family.
I really love your Teddy, trying to live up to his extended family and never quite belonging, in part at least because the obsession with blood will ever go away; I love that he's the victim of JKR's problematic characterisation of Remus and Tonks, the romance that never quite rang true, and yet entirely his own person too.
I can't wait to read more.
I've been craving Teddy Lupin fic all day, and this is simply beautiful. That's a great portrait of the family et al. And happens to fit in with my personal canon about Remus/Tonks..
Whew. I'm so glad you wrote this. I knew that you could say all the things that I want to be said about Teddy Lupin, but I wasn't sure if you would. So, thanks, I love the way you think.
I cheated when it came to the seventh book. I didn't feel like reading it, so my best friend told me everything of interest, and prime among them was telling me Rowling neglected to say how Remus and Nymphadora died, going on and on about the baby, etc etc...
XD. I think I heard more about Teddy than I did the plot.
Anyway, I love where this is going and the personality you've given Teddy. He's a nice mix of a child trying to make memories of his parents in himself and also trying to be himself.
It's so close to OCs that you can make them do whatever you want but there's all the peripheral fandom canon amazingness to backdrop it with, and it's so awesomely perfect are you going to do more?
Yep, two more chapters coming as soon as the sketches are complete :) And yeah -- I was worried about using what are basically OCs, but I think I did a decent job linking it all back to canon :D
wow that was some fast writing and scetching, loved it! Stayed up last night (well to a certain extend I was kept up by my fltmates bagging doors shut at all hours of the night) to read DH and afterwards I went and started on Stealing Harry again to cheer me up, but this is even better, because it's DH and it's good and anyway!
