I would like to let you know that the first chapter of Stealing Harry has been translated into Dutch. It is available through a Dutch frontpage as well as through an English frontpage (for the linguistically curious ;)).
At the moment I am using the summary you provide on the Skyhawke archive, if you would like me to change that, please let me know and I'll do it!
Second and third chapter are with the beta-reader, fourth chapter will follow soon!
I would like to ask you one question about the text though. Could you tell me a little more about what 'humbugs' are? I am absolutely stumped as to what sort of sweets they are as I don't think we can get them in the Netherlands (wah!) I have translated it with the Dutch boterbabbelaars (because I love that word but also because it came the closest to what you describe in the story). However, boterbabbelaars do not have a peppermint outer layer, they are hard yellow sweets that taste, well, of buttery caramel... Aah, if this is to nitpicky for your sake, please tell me to bugger off and get back to translating, but if you could help me out that would be greatly appreciated *puppy eyes*
I remember a post (or maybe it was a comment) where you explained the meaning behind the name Sandust Books. I haven't had any luck finding the post again and was hoping that you could explain the meaning behind the name once more? :)
that was actually my first Narnia book and my first book ever dealing with magic... i read it front-to-back every summer, until my 14th and the world's magic dimmed a bit.
so, as you can imagine, it took me a minute or three to compose myself after reading this.
nice one, as expected.
I regret that I didn't read this first before reading YEAR ONE... But I'm glad that I found it. I'm glad that I found you.
I love the Stealing Harryverse and have reread numerous times. I recently completed a fanart for Chapter 1 of Harry reading "The Magician's Nephew" in his cupboard. I'm working on scanning it onto my computer and wanted to know if you wanted a copy and, if so, how should I send it to you?
I read this story ages ago...and I love it. I am looking for the "Kid" rated version for a friend’s kid. Do you still have it posted somewhere? I read this originally on a separate website that had links to the “Adult” version or “Kid” version every time there was a difference, is that still up? Thanks in advance.
Hi! Unfortunately, the site died about a year ago and we were unable to resurrect it (hosting issues) so this is the only place the fic is kept now, and posting the Kidfriendly stuff was too complicated on an LJ archive.
However! If you would still like it, I have it in a zip file. Drop me a line at copperbadge at gmail dot com and I'll send it to you.
Sam, this is completely out of the blue I realize, but I'm looking at Simon's wonderful .pdf of Stealing Harry....and wondering if there was ever a version with illustrations? Am I hallucinating? I could have sworn I saw a version with illustrations.....did I make it up? :D
There were illustrations, you're not hallucinating :) The artist has since requested that I take them down -- she's building her professional career and wanted her art to reflect a strictly professional portfolio. If you're interested in a particular image, drop me a line -- copperbadge at gmail dot com :)
This fic was recced to me a while back and, since it is break, I finally have a chance to read. I'm so glad. All the characters are so wonderfully portrayed.
*squee!*
From the previous comments, I seem to gether this story is a lot bigger than what is actually written on the page...er...screen. At the risk of sounding like a nerd, what is the history of the story? Like, when was it written? I don't know , saying it seems a lot weirder than it sounds in my head. I guess I just like fandom history. Okay, I'm shutting up now.
Stealing Harry was originally written in -- 2003, I think, possibly 2004 (I have the precise date memoried, if you really want it -- check the memories of copperbadge under something like "fanfic archive"). It was only meant to be a few chapters long, but people became interested and eventually it developed a plot, ending at 28 chapters.
It now has three sequels, the Laocoon's Children series, which is currently in year three of Harry's tenure at Hogwarts. :)
oh this is wonderful. i was idly browsing for some good hp fiction, because it's cold and rainy and just perfect for holing up in bed with reading :) i can't stop now!
Friending you --I adore your writing. I was just trying to rec Stealing Harry to a friend, checked http://oojahs.snoo.org/, saw it was down, googled it, and found you here! Can't wait to catch up on Laocoon's Children ♥
It's sad, I know. I keep re-reading this story, but its gotten to be a favorite of mine. I've never reviewed before but it seems like such a shame not to let you know how much I love Stealing Harry. I especially love the way you've portrayed Remus, he's just such a perfect counterpoint to Sirius... and to be honest it's nice to see the two of them in a healthy mature relationship (although it hasn't gotten to that point yet in this chapter).
You are also responsible for half a million my Harry Potter bunnies, but they're safely contained in the plot hutch so its all good. ^_^
I've just found this through accio_rs_fics and I have to say, it's brilliant! I immediately thought this was going to be good, when Remus offered Harry humbugs, and then when Padfoot gave Harry the Magicians Nephew, well I was in love! I'm looking forward to reading the rest! :)
okay, this is brilliant! it's very different how you portrayed sirius & remus in the beginning of this chapter, I can't put my finger on it exactly but it annoyed me at first. At the end of the chapter they were completely cannon though. I like Harry a lot, you have his character down & I also like how he reacted to overhearing sirius & remus talking about lily & james.
"Can i menace them? Physically?" = my favourite line, it was so... Sirius.
I realize there is a ton of story left in this fic, but I will still leave a comment as I read if you want them.
Thanks! Glad you're enjoying it. Feel free to comment if you like, but don't comment if you don't feel you have anything to say about a given chapter, I won't mind :)
A humbug is a type of boiled sweet -- hard, peppermint candy with toffee or caramel in the middle.
I told you I was going to read all Year III again and I did, but then I ended up on chapter 22 again and... well, now I figured I'd go way back. *g* God, I loved it. I love it even more now, I think, because it's like going back to an old books. *sighs dreamily* I might end up having to print the whole thing and bind it like a book. *sighs again*
I can't believe that A) I didn't notice either of these the first time I read this, and B) No one else has pointed these out...
Harry accepted the book, looking down at the cover.
"The Magician's Nephew," he read aloud.
Why in the world did Sirius give Harry the sixth book in the series to read first? Wouldn't it have made it more sense to have him read the Narnia series in the order that they were published?
"I think all we can hope for is that he's not dead," Remus murmured softly. "He's got to stay with his family. Dumbledore said so."
"I'm his family!"
"Not his blood."
"You're his blood!"
Remus lifted an eyebrow. "I'm a second-cousin of James' mother, once removed. There's a difference."
Being related to James wouldn't do damn since it was Lily that left the protection on Harry, hence Dumbeldore leaving Harry with Lily's sister. If Remus were related to Lily, then things might be different.
I love the SH series dearly, but I can't believe that I didn't notice either of these flaws the first time around...
As I understood it, the protection the Dursleys gave Harry was a separate spell from the one Lily did -- or at least I think it was when I wrote this, since we hadn't had HBP yet? I'm not sure. *ponders*
Sirius gave Harry The Magician's Nephew first because it's the first in the series chronologically, and the title kind of has implications for the relationship between Harry and Sirius :)
